Social Gerontology in Practice - Guidance for Everyday Ageing, Shaped by Practice, Learning and Livid Experience
Sowmya Lakshmi is a social gerontology practitioner with more than two decades of experience working at the intersection of ageing, care, and community life. Her work is grounded in sustained engagement with older adults and their families, listening closely to their realities and helping them navigate the practical and emotional transitions that accompany later life.
❝ Ageing rarely unfolds in simple or predictable ways. Families often find themselves navigating unfamiliar decisions about health, care arrangements, family responsibilities, and emotional transitions. Sowmya Lakshmi’s work focuses on helping families understand these realities before they become crises.
Drawing on years of direct engagement with elders, caregivers, and care systems, she offers guidance rooted in lived experience rather than theory alone. Her approach places dignity, foresight, and relational understanding at the centre of ageing—recognising that later life is shaped not only by health conditions, but also by family dynamics, social environments, and the structures that support care. ❞
About Me
Sowmya Lakshmi’s journey into social gerontology began with a recognition that ageing is often misunderstood and inadequately supported within families and institutions. Over the years, her work has grown through sustained engagement with elders and their families, helping them navigate the complex realities of caregiving, illness, and life transitions.
Her practice brings together direct caregiving experience, institutional innovation, community education, and advocacy for age-inclusive thinking. Through this work, she seeks to shift the conversation on ageing—from crisis management to thoughtful preparation and collective responsibility.

Areas of Work
Two Decades in Practice
Over the past twenty years, Sowmya Lakshmi’s work across ageing has been rooted in close proximity to the everyday realities of later life. Through home nursing initiatives, assisted living environments, and direct counselling with elders and families, she has remained engaged with the lived experiences of ageing rather than observing them from a distance.
Her work reflects a sustained commitment to understanding ageing as it unfolds within homes, relationships, and communities.
Elder Care & Family Guidance
Much of Sowmya Lakshmi’s work involves supporting families during moments of uncertainty and transition. By assessing physical, cognitive, emotional, and social needs, she helps families design care arrangements that reflect the real circumstances of ageing.
Her guidance helps families navigate difficult decisions, maintain dignity for the older person, and build care systems that remain stable even as needs change.
Age Inclusion & Advocacy
Sowmya Lakshmi’s engagement with ageing began with an early awareness of how elders often remain visible in numbers yet invisible in concern, policy, and public conversation.
Through seminars, writing, workshops, and community engagement, she works to build greater awareness of ageing as a shared societal responsibility—encouraging institutions and communities to respond to later life with empathy, foresight, and accountability.
